In less than a minute, The University of Phoenix captured the hearts of audiences through a very simple concept...storytelling.
It's not a new concept. One that, as a teacher, I tried to teach to multiple ages throughout the years.
To have a strong story you need a beginning, middle and end.
Unfortunately, where we lose people is often in the middle. We get so caught up in climax and building characters that we forget that a good story is short, sweet, to the point and memorable.
For your business stories are 23x more memorable than any ad you could push out. And in the end, don't people already know that you want them to buy your product? So why not leave them with your story that they will remember and carry with them when they are deciding whether or not to buy from you?
By making your customers your #1 character in your story and placing yourself in their shoes, you automatically become more relatable and a business they are likely to trust...
In the process of exploring storytelling in your marketing, ask yourself this...
"Am I a brand that people will trust and relate to?"

Did you realize that up to 75% of Instagram viewers take action after looking at an IG advertising post? This can mean driving them to your profile or even website.
So let's look at some basics to make sure you are covered...
1. Have your IG set up as a business page?
2. Have your business profile done with ways to contact you directly?
3. Share behind-the-scenes looks into your product or office?
4. Repost or engage with customers who are posting about your service or product?
5. Identify users who post regularly about you?
6. Post more than one photo for post (Did you know this actually gets seen more than once by your viewing audience?)
7. Highlight employees or teams?
8. Reply to comments made on your posts?
Nothing here is mindblowing information. It is simply things that your business needs to ensure it is up to in the IG world to help drive customers to your website and engage and TRUST you.
Nothing changes if nothing changes.

I was having a conversation this morning with a client and I found myself repeating,"You don't know if it will work until you put yourself out there and try." Playing it safe is just that, safe. How do you move from average to awesome by doing just that?
I don't know if this is advice I would have ever heard myself give someone two years ago. Forcing myself to move way out of my comfort zone, to ask when I was afraid of rejection, to input my thoughts when I didn't have the confidence to stand behind them, to speak when I was afraid of my voice being misinterpreted and to jump without a parachute.
The truth is something made me change my way of thinking...that something was me...I threw a, "F**k It" into the air and hoped it would fly...and it did! That gave me the confidence I needed to soar and try to reach my highest potential.
Why share this?
Because I am a cheerleader. Always have been a huge one for others and have now found a way to be my own.
Lesson to be learned here: Throw a "F**k It" into the air...see what happens.

So, yes, I am in the business of helping new small businesses...BUT even before that was a thing for me I personally supported local small businesses. I would purchase and tell the world about it (given their customer service was on the same playing field as their product). I would share to FB, IG, post to my stories and recommend to my friends and family. What is this term in biz? "Word of mouth", "Organic growth"?

Instagram! We love you. We hate you. We love to hate you!
So I've been playing around with an account I manage as well as my IG account and found that #1 I am sick of the same old fonts. #2 I am totally frustrated that I can only provide a link in my bio and need to make a note in my content calendar every time I have to change it. Grrrr...
Now, the key with fonts is not to overdo it people...just use a different font to make something pop, stand out or grab attention. Too much noise can become annoying to your audience.

Well, it has been a hot second since I have written anything here.
I blame my birthday (41 eeeek), then Christmas, then New Years...yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Blame everything else rather than myself.
The truth is I didn't want to write about crap like...Make a resolution, cherish these moments, blah blah blah...and that was all that was in my head and surrounding me on the daily.
The other truth is I have been more productive than ever! I have been working on projects with my clients, gaining new clients, building my curriculum and creating content for my own social media.
I do have to say though, I love writing these short blogs to you all and am a bit mad at myself for letting it fall to the wayside.
I am sure that with your business you run into things like this all of the time...YOU SIMPLY RUN OUT OF TIME or you don't prioritize things.
New Year, new weekly list. This might be the cure for getting it all in for me.
I'm going to try it. I suggest you do as well. Not to overwhelm you, but to keep yourself in check so it's not a hot second and you've forgotten to do something you find important and love to do with your business.

I just got off the phone with a wonderful woman who I met over a year ago in Denver at yoga. She is an East Coaster like me and full of all the sass and energy - needless to say we formed an immediate friendship.
Were we talking about collaborating our business, yes.
Are we both working on growing and expanding our small businesses, yes.
Were we laughing hysterically while trying to maintain a level of professionalism at the same time, absolutely.
WHY EVEN WRITE ABOUT IT??
Because we got to know each other through weird yoga poses, dinners out, cups of coffee and glasses of wine. Our friendship grew in trust and now we may be working together to grow and strengthen our businesses.
Moral of the story-
NOOOO, it's not make friends so you can have more business...
It's you grow your business through THE FORMATION of trusting, genuine relationships. Sometimes they are unexpected, but a definite pleasant surprise.

Bravo for not being a Grinch during the holiday season!
Long story short I wanted to purchase a gift for my clients who are part of my Rookie Packaging. Seeing that I just started this small business, I turned to ETSY to find another small business to help.
I emailed them my logo and instructions and they not only replied within ten minutes of inquiry, but created my product and shipped it the next day (during the mad rush of Christmas orders mind you).
Four days later, like a kid on Christmas morning, I tore open my package, fell in love with the product and unfortunately noticed the logo was not in the place I had asked them to put it.
I immediately emailed them to let them know how much I loved their end product, but that the logo was placed incorrectly. Now their website and Etsy shop boasts about 100% customer satisfaction and service...THEY WEREN'T KIDDING.
Here is the response I got, "Sorry for the miscommunication. We closed the shop for the season. However, we are working late tonight to get all Christmas orders out. What we can do is send you your order at no extra cost. Our goal is 100% customer satisfaction and we want to make it right even if we don't make a profit."
Not only did they do this for me, they threw in a complimentary logo leather coaster set for me!
WHOA! TALK ABOUT STANDING BEHIND YOUR COMPANY, MOTTO and PRODUCT!
And look what it got them...a repeat customer (for sure), a raving review and someone writing a blog all about how amazing they are.

My most sincere thank you from one small business owner to another.
I hate, like absolutely hate the word average. It conjures up this feeling inside of me that stirs into my gut and makes me cringe. It's the sound and smell of mediocrity. When I hear people say, "That's a good idea!" But what I actually hear is them screaming, "You can do better good is just that, good...average". And then I crawl back into my hole and wonder how can I turn "good" into "absolutely amazing"?
Easier said than done, right?
My whole life I have gone against the grain...you tell me to park somewhere, I make my own spot. You tell me to turn right, I choose left. Maybe it's what I like to call "Only Child Syndrome" or maybe it's just because I am a pain in the ass, either way it has lead me down some interesting paths.
The one path landed me in a world of trouble, where another lead me to question WHY? WHY do I have to do it that way? WHY do we have to do what everyone else is doing? WHY is it socially unacceptable sometimes to challenge and make your own path?
Asking WHY can lead you down a very IMPORTANT path in your business. It could lead to one of exceptionality vs mediocrity. When you ask WHY you are asking for the reasons your business is being successful, doing just "good" or even sometimes tanking. Asking WHY involves listening to your customers. Listening not only for feedback, but what their interaction with you is on social media, what is their average dollar spent, if they are repeat customers and if they are recommending you to their friends.
Whether you are a brand new business just starting, or an existing small business who has been operation for a few year remember to stop and ask WHY. Why are things goings so well with your business or why are they not? Stopping to ask this could develop into the difference of being exceptional vs average.
